Jazzing Frames
Over the years, the projects of interdisciplinary artist Robin Coops became increasingly larger and conceptually more complex. At a certain point, Robin concluded that he had become a slave to his own concepts and ideas and that he wanted to be free.
During a two year Master's program at the Film-academy in Amsterdam, Robin has been focusing on creating circumstances that would open up a space for imagination, for himself, his collaborators and his audience. By doing so he aims at being less self-conscious in his work process, rediscovering a more intuitive response and becoming a performative director: one who thinks through making.
Robin uses jazz as a metaphor and guideline for the experimentation and exploration in his research. Jazz is based on the concept of improvisation and at the same time makes use of a strict set of rules. This metaphor helped Robin to structure his work process and experimentation.
As part of his research, Robin began to build towards multiple instant composing sessions and live cinema experiences. With a mixed group of dancers and singers, Robin invites the audience to be part of this experience and to explore the methods he has been developing as part of his research titled Jazzing Frames.
