Salon "Romanticism Now"
Choreographer and curator Karin Post connects dance with other (art) disciplines. At Cinedans FEST she presents a follow-up of her salon “Romanticism Now”, which was originally developed for schrit_tmacher Festival in 2019, with film excerpts, interviews and a lecture. Guests with backgrounds in dance, music and philosophy discuss the value and meaning of the romantic period.
185 years ago, the German poet Heinrich Heine published De l’Allemagne in France, from which Théophile Gautier picked up a story and transformed it into a libretto, which inspired composer Adolphe Adam and choreographer Jules Perrot to the successful performance Giselle. That is as popular as ever. But what does Giselle tell us today? Is it a Western approach to reality from the 19th century? Or is the romantic desire more universal? In our global world of hyper-individualism, is there room for the romantic desire for "another world"? We look at 19th-century dance with a 21st-century gaze: what is the value of such a tradition for us today?
Guests include cultural philosopher Maarten Doorman, composer Martijn Padding (Royal Conservatory The Hague), ballet master of Dutch National Ballet Rachel Beaujean, a hip hop dancer, and choreographer and dancer Dada Massilo.
From her background as a dancer and choreographer, Karin Post develops context programs and projects based on current themes in the arts. She also works in the visual arts as a curator of multidisciplinary exhibitions with the museum as a platform for dance.
