Five dancers from the Companhia de Dança Contemporânea de Angola (the Contemporary Dance Company of Angola) explore the concepts of tradition, culture, memory and identity in order to transform and deconstruct them into their own life and existence. Most of these dancers come from other parts of the country and therefore bring along habits and traditions that are difficult to reconcile with the bustling, erratic and hectic existence in the capital Luanda. In order to feel at home there, they felt the need to renounce who they were in order to form a new identity. One that not only reflects their original ones, but also shows how different the path is that they are taking now.
In 2017, directors Kamy Lara & Paula Agostinho captured this process during the making of a performance by Mónica Anapaz, with dancers André Baptista, Benjamin Curti, Daniel Curti, Samuel Curti and António Sande. This performance links back to the different regional dance styles in Angola and is beautifully woven in with archival materials of the different traditional dances of various regions of Angola.
