The Physical Camera
Can dance film, like dance on stage, make a physical appeal to the audience? Can camerawork speak directly to the body? Dance film makers sometimes seem to take for granted that movement on screen also evokes a sense of movement for the viewer. Having spent several years as part of the selection committee for the festival, Cinedans dramaturg Nienke Rooijakkers has a few questions, starting with: when does dance film become a physical experience? How can you make the body on film speak to the body in person--without words, in ways that feel inevitable and meaningful? Nienke has asked Marion Poeth (MA Television, Film and Theatre Studies, Utrecht University and former artistic programmer of Cinedans), to kick off the meeting with a personal statement, illustrated with relevant fragments of film. Makers and audience are invited to share their ideas and film clips they find striking and informative. A meeting to sharpen your thoughts and speak to your body!
