MA
US | 2015 | 83′
Directed & Choreographed by Celia Rowlson-Hall

In this modern-day vision of Mother Mary’s pilgrimage, a woman crosses the scorched landscape of the American Southwest. Reinvented and told entirely through movement, the film playfully deconstructs the role of this woman, who encounters a world full of bold characters that are alternately terrifying and sublime.
MA is Celia Rowlson-Hall’s award-winning feature debut, in which she is the scriptwriter, director and main protagonist. Celia combines movement and dance with film, and effortlessly navigates between the artistic and the popular. Her unconventional personal work, in which she often stars herself, conveys a restlessly curious, feminist voice. She was named “25 New Faces To Watch” by Filmmaker Magazine in 2015. They described Celia’s approach to filmmaking as “transfixing”, because it folds one art form into another, enabling her to use her body as a storytelling tool.

Our short film selection full of snow includes:
Snow (UK, ’03) by director David Hinton and choreographer Rosemary Lee
Cold Storage (FI ’16) by director Thomas Freundlich and choreographer Valtteri Raekallio
Birds in the earth (FI ’19) by director Marja Helander and the dancers / choreographers Birit and Katja Haarla
kopitoto (JP ’20) Lisa & JuJu Kusanagi and Yvonne Meier,
and Golden Calf winner Nussin (NL ’93) by director Clara van Gool.
